Project History

RSI Ltd, based in Derbyshire, is a Bridge Inspection and Testing company and is
currently working on some of the busiest infrastructures in the UK.

Barrow Hill Engine Shed Society
Rogers Structural Investigations Ltd was commissioned by the Barrow Hill Engine Shed Society of Chesterfield, Derbyshire to carry out a condition survey for refurbishment of their on-site cast iron water tank.

The BHESS are a voluntary society, dedicated to the maintenance, upkeep and restoration of decommissioned railway engines, utilising one of the few remaining operational roundhouses in Britain today.

The water tank was constructed possibly using early steel castings (sample testing would determine exact composition), and measures 9.7m x 6.1m x 1.8m high. The primary use for the tank was to fill steam engines but also provided a water supply to the work sheds.

The structure was found to suffer from high levels of corrosion and section loss. These defects are now being addressed in order to return the water tank to service.
